June 1940: As German troops march into Paris, Jacques Jaujard (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) and Count Franziskus Wolff Metternich (Benjamin Utzerat) work to protect the treasures of the Louvre Museum… This is just the jumping-off point for Russian master Alexander Sokurov’s (Russian Ark) gorgeously shot (by Amélie’s masterful Bruno Delbonnel) exploration of the relationship between art, culture and power that traverses the centuries…

"It will be impossible to neatly package Francofonia into a brief and accurate description, since Alexander Sokurov’s dense, enriching meditation on the Louvre and specifically (but not exclusively) the museum’s status during WWII defies categorization… A constant shuffling of layers is one of the film’s hallmarks: It cuts from deathbed photos of Chekhov and Tolstoy to a Skype conversation that Sokurov has with a ship captain, then shifts to the warm glow of 1940-set scenes between Louvre head [Jaujard] and German officer [Metternich]. In between are lessons on the Louvre’s centuries-long construction; archival footage of Parisians getting on with their lives during the Nazi Occupation; reflections on how portraiture shaped European civilization; and the spirit of Napoleon (Vincent Nemeth) walking the museum’s grand galleries, occasionally encountering the personification of France, Marianne (Johanna Korthals Altes)… Does it all come together? Well, yes, if viewers think of the film as a freewheeling poetic essay, highly personal yet captivating.”—Jay Weissberg, Variety

"With this sophisticated, complex and thoroughly absorbing film, [Sokurov] has had another night at the museum reverie… Francofonia is a fascinating essay and meditation on art, history and humanity’s idea of itself."—Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

:D Anton Chekhov--1890

Poised, exquisite and ever so French, here is period drama at its finest. Nicolas Giraud is superb as the Russian writer, a man just detached enough from life to master its essence on the page. The movie begins with Chekhov as a practicing doctor with a fairly lucrative side trade in short tales. He uses the money from these to support his family and does not at all consider himself an artist. Then, suddenly, publishers declare him a genius and promise to make him rich. We see Chekhov go on to reach the heights of his artistry, all the while remaining at the centre of his loving family.

Director René Féret has a gift for understatement in the finest French tradition; his film is placid but always riveting. He has an eye for subtlety and telling detail that would do the writer himself proud: when we see Chekhov give the cast of his play The Seagull directions for a more genuine portrayal of life, we recognize that the same dictates are being followed by Féret himself. That’s as good a tribute as one can give to one of literature’s greatest geniuses.

“Understated yet expressive… It’s a major gamble to tell Chekhov’s story in a style akin to his own but one that finally pays off.”—Boyd Van Hoeij, Hollywood Reporter

Завтра! И в четверг ))))

Master filmmaker Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark) transforms a portrait of the world-renowned museum into a magisterial, centuries-spanning reflection on the relation between art, culture and power.
