Another power outage hits parts of Vancouver; fourth since Saturday
By Vivian Luk, Vancouver Sun August 24, 2010 VANCOUVER - Another power outage - the fourth one in as many days - hit parts of Vancouver this morning, BC Hydro said.
Power went out at 10:40 a.m, and was back up by 11:20 a.m, said spokeswoman Simi Heer. The outage affected 8,700 customers, and the affected area was located at three different pockets roughly along Oak Street and between W. 8th and W. 29th Avenues.
A malfunctioning piece of equipment at the Sperling substation had caused the blackout, Heer said. Electricians have since repaired it.
Equipment failure has been the cause of the last three outages that occurred on Saturday and Monday. On both Saturday night and Monday morning, power was lost for more than an hour and about 25, 000 customers were affected. Similarly, on Monday evening, about 25, 000 customers in Vancouver and parts of Burnaby were hit by power outage.
A different piece of equipment at Main Waring substation had failed in each instance, but the cases were not connected, Heer said. The outage on Monday morning had caused a small isolated fire, but it was quickly suppressed.
Heer claims power outages are common, and there is nothing in the last four instances that indicate there are any reliability issues to be concerned about.
