Many of the glass condominium towers filling up the Toronto skyline will fail 15 to 25 years after they’re built, perhaps even earlier, and will need retrofits costing millions of dollars, say some industry experts.

Buyers drawn to glass-walled condos because of the price and spectacular views may soon find themselves grappling with major problems including:

Insulation failures.
Water leaks.
Skyrocketing energy and maintenance costs.
Declining resale potential.

Glass condominiums — known in the industry as window walls — have floor-to-ceiling glass, so essentially the window becomes the wall. Window walls generally span from the top of the concrete slab right to the bottom.

One developer calls glass-walled condos “throw-away buildings” because of their short lifespan relative to buildings with walls made of concrete or brick.

“We believe that somewhere between, say, five and 15 [years], many, many of those units will fail,” said David House of Earth Development, which bills itself as a socially responsible property developer.

The average pay hike is for the top executive at each of the Standard & Poor 500 companies, according to GMI, the research group formerly known as the Corporate Library. A broader survey of CEO pay at 3,000 companies posted an average 27% increase.

The most lucrative sector for CEO pay was health care, which included three of the nine top-paid executives, including the two most lucrative packages:

$145 million for John Hammergen of McKesson Corp. (MCK, Fortune 500), which distributes drugs and health and beauty care products to pharmacies; and
$98 million for Joel Gemunder, who retired in July 2010 as CEO of Omnicare (OCR, Fortune 500), which provides drugs to nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

Имхо, конечно, зарплаты СЕО, вырванные из контекста, звучат провокационно для маленького хомячка. Однако, как оценить вклад СЕО в компанию? Что если остальные сотрудники компании тоже неплохо оплачиваются? Я, например, как-то подавал резюме в Маккессон, знаю кое-кого, кто там работает.
Кроме того, такие суммы совсем не означают, что они будут разбазарены, вывезены за рубеж (в Россию хе-хе), пропиты, проиграны в рулетку. Они скорее всего вложены в акции того же МакКессона - т.е. работают на компанию. А если не в Маккессон, то в другие акции. И что с того, что они номинально принадлежат конкретному СЕО?
Имхо, осуждать величину гонораров СЕО - все равно, что протестовать против большой цены дома в даунтауне, несоразмеримой со стоимостью материалов, из которых он построен. Ага, давайте распределять дома в даунтауне недорого, в порядке живой очереди (платить СЕО зарплату, как инженеру) - что мы получим?

Что значит "воруют у своего народа"? Фразеология из советского прошлого, однако. Лекарства - не полезные ископаемые и не налоги. Между прочим, в Канаде лекарства дешевле, чем в штатах.
Кажется, вы не поняли аналогии про квартиры в даунтауне. Новые, хорошие лекарства могут стоить сколь угодно дорого - просто потому, что они хорошо лечат и их ни у кого нет. И народ будет с удовольствием их покупать за любые деньги.
