Ottawa announces new passport rules

OTTAWA — The federal government is making it easier to get and renew passports.

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay announced today that the government is simplifying the passport application process.

Under the new rules, it will no longer be necessary to have a guarantor or to provide proof of citizenship to renew a passport.

For first-time applicants, the guarantor process will be simplified so that most citizens can act as guarantors.

Currently, only professionals in certain occupations can do so.

The changes are partly aimed at easing a huge backlog of passport applications in the wake of new U.S. rules that require Canadians to have passports to cross the border.

The U.S. has suspended some of its requirements for Americans travelling abroad to deal with a massive application backlog there.
