The standard by which the middle class is rated has recently gone up, and some people say it’s left them feeling a bit disheartened. To be considered middle class — the 20 per cent of Canadians right in the middle
of the wealth distribution — you need to have $92,000 to $244,300 in net worth, which includes assets like income and home minus your debts. This is up from $66,000 to $169,000 four years ago. That’s according to the
2007 All Canadian Wealth Report, published in MoneySense Magazine and released on Monday.
Stylist Mani Bratch, 34, lives in Yaletown with her husband, an investment adviser, and their 16-month-old
son. She said she was surprised to think her family just barely qualifies as middle class despite taking in more than $100,000 a year. “I think it’s unfair,” she said of labelling people with a net worth of less than
$92,000 as lower class. “It sounds wrong.” Dave Smith, 33, a construction worker in Richmond, earns around $33,000 a year and said the report is depressing. Smith added that yesterday he would have considered himself lower-middle class, but now he’s “somewhere between a gutter and a cardboard box.”
The median annual paycheque in Canada is $26,300.
The median Canadian family earns between $58,000 and $82,000.
The average British Columbian under 34 earns $22,804 a year, and those between 35 and 44 make an average of
$40,448 annually.
