NDP's Layton wants to lower your cell phone bill
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Do Canadians pay too much for cell phone services? The federal NDP leader thinks so, and he wants Ottawa to do something about it.
Jack Layton says cell phone rates are skyrocketing, and the government needs to step in and stop the telecoms from charging certain fees. "We want these access charges of $60 to $80 a year cancelled. They have absolutely no justification."
News1130 Business Editor, Richard Dettman, says on this issue Layton has a point. "This is a rare occasion where free market supporters and the leader of a socialist party find themselves on the same side of an issue. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development says the average cell phone bill in Canada is one-third more than it is in the United States, and it's the highest of the 30 countries the OECD surveyed. It says this is stalling the widespread use of mobile devices."
