Fights, stabbing on crowded English Bay beach bring in RCMP helicopter

Vancouver police were forced to call in the services of an RCMP helicopter as they struggled to control fights and deal with a stabbing at English Bay on Saturday night.

An estimated 1,500-2,000 people were on the beach when the mayhem began to unfold starting at about 9 p.m.

Two men got into an argument that escalated when one pulled a knife and slashed the other in the throat, police said. Both were 20-year-olds from Vancouver.

The victim was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He didn't cooperate with police, but a witness videotaped the entire incident which helped police make a quick arrest, VPD Insp. Ted Schinbein said. Investigators also recovered the knife used in the attack.

A suspect, known to police, is in custody and faces charges of assault causing bodily harm.

Later, at around 10:15 p.m., police used pepper spray to break up a brawl involving approximately 100 drunken youths.

The RCMP's Air One helicopter used its high-powered spotlight to help the marine squad and patrol police move troublemakers off the beach and close it down for the night.

In total, officers dealt with at least seven disturbance and fight calls, four reports of mass pepper-sprayings and at least three gun calls, Schinbein said.

I think this is a good time to ban beaches and ocean shores. They are attracting more than just crabs and mollusks.

Vancouver is seriously sick. Everytime crowds get together all heck breaks lose. Canada Day gets cancelled because the police cant control it. You dont see this happening in Toronto or Montreal or Calgary etc. Why is it Vancouver has so much trouble with punks?

It amazes me that in today's day and age there are so many fools out there who cannot control their emotions and insist on displaying their lack of intelligence. We certainly have a wonderful example setting future generation to look forward to.

Is it something in the air or water in BC or has everyone gone off their rocker? The amount of violence we are seeing this year is alarming and the summer is just starting. With the campground stabbings and beach fights, this will only serve to further darken BC's tourist destination image. It also will only serve to give authorities the excuse to ramp up security well in advance of 2010. What happened to the Canada I grew up in?

How can a place be so beautiful and yet so full of ugly, violent, cowardly people (sorry, make that freaks)? Are these freaks also reising the next generation of youth and will they be even worse?We need our armed forces here to clean up the crime here. Double the police force to get rid of gangs. Lets quit being afraid of these useless %#%s! Stop glorifying crime on TV. Knock down some of the old buildings and have the homeless and street people develop gardens, something to take pride in.

Honestly, who are these cowards that bring knives to a fistfight? I'm not one to sit back and say that fighting is okay, but if you've got some anger issues you need to work out with a fellow aggro-loser, have at it, I guess. But seriously, if you can't get the job done yourself, the opposite of tough is to bring a weapon. Either don't fight, or leave the cutlery at home. I hope they throw the book at this kid- three years in jail! A black eye seems like a pretty good alternative now, doesn't it???
