The government agency which oversees bankruptcies in Canada says the number of people and businesses that went bust in June was 51.1 per cent higher than in June 2008.
The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy says there were 14,418 insolvencies recorded in June of this year, compared with 9,538 a year earlier.
Personal bankruptcies, which made up the vast majority of the filings, rose 54.3 per cent over June 2008, to a total of 13,792.
