On August 31st, more than 80 000 barebreasted maidens danced for two hours in front of King Mswati III who was dressed in a leopard skin loin cloth. In this tiny kingdom located between South Africa and Mozambique, the Reed dance is an annual event which celebrates the virginity of young girls.

Two thirds of the Swazis live below the poverty line. One third relies on international food aid. However, the country is rich thanks to its diamond and coal mines. If its resources were equally redistributed, each Swazi would earn 950 euros a year, twice the average of Sub-Saharan countries. But the royal family monopolizes half of the national wealth.
