Olimpic rentals - oversupply in the market

BOB MACKIN - Operators of two well-known Olympic accommodation websites aren’t ready to declare a buyer’s market, but they’re using the same O-word. “What we’re seeing is an oversupply in the market,” said Rent2010.net webmaster Mark Szekely. “Rentals are taking place, however not as rapidly as a lot of homeowners would like.”
The 2006-launched site has 2,500 house and condo listings. Szekely said the average per-room, per-night asking price has fallen from $350 last year to $300.
HomeForTheGames.com launched Aug. 12 with a goal of listing 1,000 properties. Acting project manager Tracey Axelsson said Friday that there were 60 bookings. By Monday, 144 properties were listed. Axelsson expects 200 listings by Feb. 12. “That is radically shorter than what we had hoped,” Axelsson said. “There’s these mixed messages, ‘oh my god all these people are coming and we have no place to put them’ and the other message is ‘pretty well everyone has found a place already.’
HomeForTheGames.com requires landlords have permits and insurance and sets a 50 per cent minimum donation of rental fees to the Streetohome Foundation and Covenant House. Axelsson said $100 to $200 a night rooms are getting extended bookings. Most
bookings are for three-day stays.
As of Monday, 218 landlords in the City of Vancouver bought the $106 temporary rental permits. The original goal was 1,000.
