In 12 years, New Century had grown into the nation's second-largest lender to homeowners with marginal credit histories, who also happen to be at higher risk of foreclosure. However, like other so-called sub-prime lenders, it has struggled as the housing market has declined to secure the loans it needs to finance mortgages.

Lenders like Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Countrywide Financial Corp. have announced hundreds of layoffs. Other companies heavily invested in sub-prime loans, like Fremont General, have delayed financial filings and announced plans to sell that portion of their business.
