It is very sad indeed.
You are right - slowly but surely we follow our neighbor from the south in turning into a 'total recall' police state. The police kills in the broad daylight setting an example and sending a message of what will happen to any non-compliant citizen. government is silently OK'ing this tactic as they need a force to keep citizens at bay.
Имхо Unfortunately for us - coming from an ex-communist sate it is difficult to see and realize what is going on.

А если вдруг, в следующий раз, стаиплер окажется в ваших руках или в руках ваших детей!? на эту мысль глюкозы уже не хватает.
Ironically, the fact that out of entire population of KAmorka only like 3-or 4 people can see this situation just proves the point...
