Job Description - Oracle Database Administrator
Status: Full-Time
Grade/Salary: 11 ($74,074.00 - $96,200.00 annually)

Purpose

The Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) maintains all enterprise databases to ensure integrity, performance, availability and recoverability of data. This Administrator conducts end-to-end plan design, controls production and implements and monitors database systems. The primary focus for this individual will be design, install, monitoring, patching, replication health, backups and the overall support of the Oracle RAC database environments in accordance with best practices for Oracle and enterprise database management.

Individual Key Contributions/Responsibilities

Database Management Proactively monitor database performance and take necessary actions to improve throughput and stability of the database platform.

Plan and execute database upgrades and patches.
Troubleshoot production issues and clearly communicate the resolution to the stakeholders.
Work with the Enterprise Architecture team to ensure optimal logical and physical database design.
Participate in evaluating hardware platforms and software applications that require databases. Work closely with System Engineers on tasks and issues related to hardware.
Ensure that the development and test databases are functioning properly and work with the developers to make sure that the enterprise database conventions and security standards are being followed.
Provide night and weekend support during outages and implementations.
Plan and implement a training program to train new DBAs in the necessary skills to support and maintain the enterprise databases.
Define and document operating procedures related to the supported databases.
Design, document, implement, and support database management structures, as well as database back-up, recovery, security, archiving and conversion strategies.
Collaborates with application development teams and takes a lead role in problem resolution on various database issues.

Focus on enhancing database performance through proactive monitoring, capacity planning, reporting and tuning and provide technical assistance and mentoring to various staff.

Perform system & job monitoring, health-checks to ensure the overall well-being of the DB systems, development, improvement and management of reactive and proactive system tools and researching and recommending better tools.

Assist in the definition of standards, support of the SDLC (i.e. reviews, tools, standards, features) and be a key contributor in continuous process improvement.

Install, maintain and expand diagnostic tools and monitoring.

Perform backup, restore, recovery, compliance.

Decision Making

Performed within approved guidelines prescribed by supervisor/policy. Exercise independent judgement in selecting and interpreting information, reconciling deviations from standard methods and resolving problems. Finished work is reviewed for attainment of objectives and effectiveness of results.

Complex planning of major projects and work that requires substantial co-ordination of programs, budgets and activities is required.

Qualifications
Minimum Job-Related Experience

Minimum 10+ Years of Job Related Experience

10+ Years production Oracle Database Administration experience, including the following: - performance and tuning for enterprise DB systems - supporting enterprise mission critical DB systems - database problem resolution, dealing with Oracle, creation of SRs - creating/cloning/duplicating databases - Oracle database upgrades, patching - database monitoring Must have experience with 11g R2 RAC installation, administration, maintenance, patching on UNIX platforms (preferable in RedHat flavor of Linux). Database backup and recovery using RMAN and with "User Managed Backup and Recovery" techniques. Must have experience with Dataguard, and RMAN. Experience Implementing and monitoring database functionality to ensure stable environments. Detailed, extensive knowledge of Oracle RAC including Automated Storage Management and Cluster Ready Services is a must. Strong understanding of all aspects of Oracle 11G R2 RAC. Experience with RAC administration, installation, configuration and patching. Experience with Active Data Guard, Compression and Partitioning. Experience working in a 24x7x365 operational environment.


Minimum Formal Education

Bachelor's Degree or a diploma requiring 3 - 4 years of full-time study.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or comparable experience.


Minimum Technical Skills


Hands on Unix skills(preferable in RedHat flavor of Linux) and Shell Scripting.
Ability to troubleshoot production problems and performance tuning of enterprise mission critical DB systems.
