In an effort to contain the mouse population in the Vancouver building, Pivotal is employing a new, environmentally-friendly rodent control strategy. Each Friday evening — starting tonight and continuing through April — a representative from the SPCA will release approximately 100 cats into the complex, and then round them up each Sunday night.

“This method of rodent control may seem unusual, but it is safe and has proven successful in offices across North America. It’s also much more humane than the traditional traps and poisons,” says Gabe Eyers, Purchasing and Facilities Manager and senior rodent control officer. “I am confident this strategy will meet with success, virtually eliminating the mouse problem in the Vancouver office.

“It also provides the cats with a relaxing weekend getaway and much needed exercise. And staff with allergies need not be concerned. The cats will be on site only on weekends and are not expected to disturb employees.”

However, since the PIVOTAL cannot guarantee that each and every cat will be rounded up on Sunday night, we encourage employees to do a brief CAT scan each Monday morning. If you notice a feline wandering around, stay calm, pick it up, and bring it to the main security desk as soon as possible. The SPCA will pick up any strays Mondays after 2 p.m.

In preparation for Operation Pounce, litter boxes are being supplied to every department office on the 7th floor of 858 Beatty. They were delivered last night in preparation for the weekend. If you notice one under or around your desk, please do not disturb or remove it. In addition, for safety reasons, all cats will be issued PIVOTAL-approved personal protective equipment.

“Rest assured, the SPCA is not using just any cats but felines specially trained in rodent detection and capture,” says Felix Burrows, executive director of the SPCA’s Cat Training Corps. “Once they detect a mouse, these felines do not pounce like ordinary alley cats but instead lure it to a safe containment tank using a combination of hypnotism and animal magnetism. They wave their tails back and forth until the mice enter a hypnotic state, then gently lead the rodents away.”

While the SPCA assures us they won’t have any trouble rounding up the cats each Sunday night, if any stray felines elude capture by Pivotal employees on Monday morning, they have a contingency plan. Labrador retrievers will be released in Vancouver with strict instructions.
