As you are probably aware, an amendment to BC’s Motor Vehicle Act came into effect on January 1, 2010. This amendment prohibits the use of handheld electronic devices (including cell phones) while driving in British Columbia.
The following devices or actions are prohibited while driving:
* Operating or holding hand-held cell phones or other electronic devices
* Sending/reading emails or texting on hand-held devices
* Operating or holding hand-held music or portable gaming devices
* Programming or adjusting GPS systems (built in or otherwise).
The following devices or actions are still permitted while driving:
* Using hands-free cell phones that are built in or securely fixed to the vehicle, and can be activated or deactivated through the single touch of one button
* Using two-way radios for industry
* Calling 9-1-1 to report an emergency.
Drivers may still use handheld devices if their vehicle is legally parked and not impeding traffic.
