Re: Vancouver International Film Festival

Hastings street

Re: Vancouver International Film Festival

4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
4 Luni, 3 Saptamini si 2 Zile
[FOURM] Special Presentations
Romania, 2007, 113 min
Directed By: Cristian Mungiu
EXEC PROD: Florentina Onea
PRODS: Oleg Mutu, Cristian Mungiu
SCR: Cristian Mungiu
CAM: Oleg Mutu
ED: Dana Bunescu
Cast: Anamaria Marinca, Vlad Ivanov, Laura Vasiliu, Alexandru Potoceanu, Adi Carauleanu
Popular winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, Cristian Mungiu's masterfully told story is a gripping experience you will never forget. It demonstrates once again (c.f. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu and 12:08 East of Bucharest) that Romania is in the midst of a cinematic renaissance.
Romania, during the last days of Communism. Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) and Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) are students sharing a room in a hall of residence in Bucharest. Gabita has gotten herself pregnant and, with Otilia in tow, arranges to meet a certain Mr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov) in a cheap hotel to procure an illegal abortion. Thus begins their all-too-real descent into danger.
"Pitch perfect and brilliantly acted, 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days is a stunning achievement, directed with a purity and honesty that captures not just the illegal abortion story at its core but the constant, unremarked negotiations necessary for survival in the final days of the Soviet bloc. Showcasing all the elements of new Romanian cinema--long takes, controlled camera and an astonishing ear for natural dialogue--Cristian Mungiu's masterly film plays only one false note in an otherwise beautifully textured story... Certain to be spoken of with the same regard as The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, with which it shares cinematographer Oleg Mutu, pic is envisioned, like that surprise hit, as the first in a series, ironically titled 'Tales From the Golden Age.' Mungiu's goal is to visualize the overwhelming weight of the soul-destroying compromises of life during the Ceausescu years through clear-eyed, deeply humane stories..."--Jay Weissberg, Variety

The Duchess of Langeais
Ne touchez pas la hache
[DUCHE] Spotlight on France
France, 2007, 137 min, 35mm
Directed By: Jacques Rivette
PRODS: Pierre Grise, Martine Marignac, Maurice Tinchant, Luigi Musini, Roberto Cicutto, Ermanno Olmi
SCR: Pascal Bonitzer, Christine Laurent
CAM: William Lubtchansky
ED: Nicole Lubtchansky
Cast: Jeanne Balibar, Guillaume Depardieu, Bulle Ogier, Michel Piccoli, Barbet Schroeder
Jacques Rivette has previously made Balzac-themed films: La Belle Noiseuse (loosely based on The Unknown Masterpiece) and of course the recently rediscovered Out 1 (inspired by the History of the Thirteen trilogy). Here, with the help of his regular screenwriter Pascal Bonitzer and two highly idiosyncratic stars in Jeanne Balibar and Guillaume Depardieu, he attempts a more literal adaptation. The source is The Duchesse de Langeais, the middle story of the Thirteen trilogy (Don't Touch the Axe is the translation of its original title), and Rivette claims he was motivated this time by a desire "to be faithful not only to the spirit but also the letter of Balzac's text."
The star-crossed romance opens with Depardieu's wounded war hero finding his long-lost love, Balibar's coquettish socialite, in a Majorcan convent and then flashes back to detail their complicated, tragically out-of-sync courtship, played out in the drawing rooms of Restoration Paris. The supremely confident duchess toys with her stolid suitor with obvious pleasure, reeling him in then rebuffing him, until she goes too far in her humiliations and awakens not just a protective cold-heartedness but a vengeful streak. Naturally once he shuts down she opens up... [The film] is often torrentially talky, but it's far from boring--rarely has a film paid such enraptured attention to the weight and flow of words. Balibar and Depardieu, both excellent, illuminate the minutely shifting dynamics of their characters' tortured pas de deux... The dry playfulness, the dazzling intricacy of the verbal and physical choreography, and the sense of love as a potentially deadly game are all quintessentially Rivette's.--Dennis Lim, Indiewire

Клод Шаброль. Французы его очень любят. Смотрели наверное его Церемония. С Изабель Юпер. Это Франция-как она есть. На любителя. Медленное и реалистичное кино.
The Girl Cut in Two
La Fille coupée en deux
[GIRLC] Spotlight on France
France, 2007, 115 min
Directed By: Claude Chabrol
EXEC PROD: Françoise Galfré
PROD: Patrick Godeau
SCR: Claude Chabrol, Cécile Maistre
CAM: Eduardo Serra
ED: Monique Fardoulis
MUS: Matthieu Chabrol
Cast: Ludivine Sagnier, François Berléand, Benoît Magimel, Mathilda May, Caroline Sihol
It's cynical business as usual for Claude Chabrol, who offers plentiful style and psychological finesse... in his latest jaundiced and sophisticated entertainment. The story of a young woman caught between two rivalrous and highly unsuitable admirers, A Girl Cut In Two has the typical trappings of a Chabrol thriller, although it would be more accurate to call this a melodrama of manners with a dark streak of social satire... The eponymous heroine, played by Ludivine Sagnier, is Camille Deneige--her surname suggesting that she's pure as the driven snow, though she's anything but. Camille is an independent, ambitious TV weather girl who finds herself courted by two men whose rivalrous antipathy goes way back. One is Charles Saint-Denis (François Berleand), an elderly, highly successful novelist whose marriage to artist wife Genevieve (Caroline Sihol)--whom he terms a "saint"--allows him time and space to dabble in more sinnerly pursuits... Running into Camille at a TV studio, Charles pursues her, and the young woman finds herself falling head over heels in love with this greying literary lion... But it's not long before he dumps her, leaving the way clear for her other admirer to make his move. He is infantile, spoiled and somewhat deranged Paul Gaudens (Benoît Magimel), playboy son of a pharmaceutical tycoon..."--Screen Daily
""A sardonic tale of duality filtered through class differences... With language and mannerisms that are laugh-out-loud funny, [Claude Chabrol's] Lyons-set story of a local TV weather girl who is simultaneously pursued by two very different men eviscerates the non-charm of the bourgeoisie."--Variety
