U.S. charges 22-year-old Canadian Karim Baratov and two Russian spies with massive Yahoo data breach
On Wednesday, U.S. officials said Baratov was one of four alleged co-conspirators indicted following what officials called one of the largest data breaches in history, the hack of Yahoo which exposed 500 million user accounts
Described by the U.S. as a citizen of Canada and Kazakhstan, Baratov had allegedly been working as a hacker for the Russian Federal Security Service, or FSB, which had paid him bounties for the passwords and email accounts of individuals they were targeting. http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world ... ata-breach
Who is Karim Baratov, the alleged Canadian Yahoo hacker? The FBI alleges that 22-year-old Karim Baratov, from Ancaster, Ont., was one of four men connected with a series of cyberattacks carried out on Yahoo that began in early 2014. https://ca.yahoo.com/news/karim-baratov ... 47273.html
Also indicted in the alleged conspiracy that authorities said began in January 2014 were Dmitry Aleksandrovich Dokuchaev, 33,
Igor Anatolyevich Sushchin, 43,
and Alexsey Alexseyevich (Magg) Belan, 29,
all Russian nationals and residents. Dokuchaev and Sushchin were said to be Russian intelligence agents who allegedly masterminded and directed the hacking, the justice department said.
Dokuchaev and Sushchin allegedly tasked Baratov with hacking more than 80 accounts in exchange for commissions, according to U.S. authorities, who submitted a provisional arrest warrant to Canadian authorities March 7.
"When Baratov was successful, as was often the case, his handling FSB officer, Dokuchaev, paid him a bounty," the 34-page indictment states. https://ca.yahoo.com/news/us-expected-a ... 33037.html
