Bill Gates has said he’s surprised by the number of ‘crazy’ and ‘evil’ Covid conspiracies that involve him, but wants to understand what’s behind them.
Speaking to Reuters, the Microsoft founder said the ‘crazy conspiracy theories’ about him and infectious diseases expert Anthony Fauci were probably due to a combination of a frightening viral pandemic and the rise of social media.
‘Nobody would have predicted that I and Dr. Fauci would be so prominent in these really evil theories,’ he said. ‘I’m very surprised by that. I hope it goes away.’
Some of the more imaginative theories spread around Facebook by people’s cousins’ mates who know a bloke who knows a cleaner at Pfizer (none of which is backed up with any evidence, we should add) include the notion that Fauci and Gates, who has given at least $1.75bn to the global pandemic response, started the pandemic to profit from it.
‘But do people really believe that stuff?’ Gates asked.
Apparently so.
