Washington, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) US President George W. Bush asked Congress on Wednesday to broaden a law allowing the government to spy on US citizens without a warrant, an initiative seriously questioned by civil rights groups.

During a visit to the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland, the president defended the project and expressed his intention to make it permanent.

To justify his decision, he said this will contribute to protecting the country from becoming vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

The plan allows authorities to spy on communication between US citizens and people abroad without judicial authorization, while monitoring under the Patriot Act includes tapping phones, intercepting correspondence and email, and filching work documents and clinical histories.
