Police said yesterday a body found in a Burnaby ravine was that of a woman who had tried and failed to escape domestic violence.

"It's a murder and we have reason to believe the murder occurred in Vancouver," said police spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness.

The body of 27-year-old Kataryna Semenova was found Tuesday. It was spotted in shallow water by someone walking a dog along the ravine near Marine Drive and MacPherson Avenue.

Semenova was reported missing Feb. 1 by New Westminster police after she failed to return to a safe house. She had been at the shelter for several weeks in an effort to get away from her abusive ex-partner, Mac Steele, 29.

Semenova's clothing and possessions were left intact at the safe house and there was no activity on her cellphone or bank account after she went missing. At the time of her disappearance, police described Semenova's relationship as "very abusive."

Steele was arrested in Burnaby late last year and charged with sexual assault and assault by choking. As part of Steele's bail conditions, he was ordered to stay away from Semenova.

Police said Steele left B.C. by bus shortly after Semenova went missing and travelled to his hometown of Thunder Bay, Ont. He died of a drug overdose at his mother's home a few days later in an apparent suicide.

McGuinness said Semenova's body was identified through dental records.

She would not reveal what evidence police had that suggested Semenova was killed in Vancouver. "We will not be disclosing information regarding where it happened or exactly when it happened as the investigation is still ongoing," McGuinness said, adding police have not yet confirmed who killed Semenova.

The file was initially handled by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and New West police. Next of kin have been notified. Semenova's death is Vancouver's fifth homicide of the year.
