WINNIPEG - Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Thursday the Harper government is considering selling real estate and other Crown assets to help keep the budget balanced as the economy worsens.
"I won't get into the things that Canadians own, but they'd be very surprised to know that they own things like the CN Tower," Flaherty said on the sidelines of the Conservative policy convention.
Flaherty quickly clarified that the CN Tower is not for sale, but he made it clear that the government is leaving no stone unturned in its effort to avoid the embarrassment of posting the country's first deficit in more than a decade.
"We are going to review the corporate assets, the capital assets, of the government of Canada, to see whether they still perform a useful function for the Canadian people," said Flaherty. "If that review shows that there should be some assets that should be sold, then we'll go ahead with them."
The government of Canada owns trillions of dollars of capital assets, from office buildings to residences and machinery and equipment. The CN Tower, for example, is owned and managed by the Canada Lands Co., a Crown corporation that also holds the government's shares in properties such as the Old Port of Montreal.
Flaherty also said the government is looking at controlling the rate of growth in the salaries of public servants, and is continuing with a strategic review of expenditures at all government departments.Canada is examining selling some of its national assets as a way to ease pressure on the budget in the midst of a financial crisis, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Thursday.
Flaherty deflected a reporter's question on whether the government would try to sell the CN Tower, the iconic marker on the Toronto skyline.
