Microsoft slashes up to 5,000 jobs

Software giant says it will cut 1,400 jobs immediately, and posts lower earnings that miss estimates.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Software maker Microsoft Corp. announced Thursday it will cut up to 5,000 jobs in the next year and a half, or 5.5% of its global workforce, citing further deterioration of global economic conditions.

The company also posted lower fiscal second-quarter earnings that missed analysts' forecasts.

Microsoft will slash 1,400 positions immediately, with the rest of the cuts coming by June 2010. The company also said it will freeze employees' pay in 2009.

Microsoft said it will save about $1.5 billion in operating expenses and $700 million in 2009 capital expenditure from the job cuts and pay freeze.

Да, усё верно. Тока не 17%, а примерно 5%.
Однако не всех команд это коснется, тьфу-тьфу... Больше всего сокращений будет в явно убыточных проектах, равно как и сами проекты закрываются. (типа любимого интерактивного столика Билли, в который вбухали кучу денег, а кроме Билли играть в него никто не хочет...)
Есть и хорошая новость: если ваш проект закрывается, вы можете перейти в другой. Внутри компании вакансий полно, в прибыльных проектах. Внешний хайер фриз только.
В общем проще сказать так: пока народ новый практически не набирают, внутри компании тасуют туда-сюда. Полных лузеров конечно сократят, но их и без кризиса каждые полгода отсеивают... Старперы не пострадают
