RCMP hiring hundreds for B.C. jobs

The RCMP in B.C. is looking for more than 400 recruits to fill vacancies in the province caused by retirements.

“I saw on the news that even Microsoft, they were laying off 5,000 employees,” RCMP Const. Annie Linteau said Tuesday. “We are saying: `we are hiring. Come to us.’” And an added incentive, successful candidates from Metro Vancouver will have a guaranteed posting in their home region, she said.

Up until now, RCMP recruits learn of their first assignment just three weeks before the end of their training in Regina.

“For the first time ever in RCMP history, the people that are selected will know they will be coming back to B.C.” she said.

That could make the RCMP as attractive an employment opportunity as municipal police forces like Vancouver, Abbotsford or Port Moody, she said.

“If someone is considering at the moment getting hired by VPD or Abbotsford because they want to stay here in the Lower Mainland, well here is your one and only chance to go to this career presentation on Saturday and see if you can be part of the RCMP.”

There will be two presentations - one at 9 a.m. and one at noon - at the Justice Institute of British Columbia Lecture Theatre, 715 McBride Blvd., New Westminster.

The RCMP is also implementing a new streamlined application process that will cut the normal year-long process down to less than three months in some cases.

"The fast track process is designed to deliver recruits to the front line sooner and we can now guarantee that a candidate will be returning to a Lower Mainland community," said RCMP S.Sgt. Doug Ferguson, a recruiting specialist.

Across Canada, the force is looking for more than 1,792 new members a year for the next five years.

Selected applicants will be able to attend RCMP training and receive a $500 a week allowance for 24 weeks. The annual salary for a three-year constable is $75,657, plus benefits.
