Canadian taxpayers are on the hook for slightly more than $2-million to cover Brian Mulroney's legal costs at the federal inquiry into his financial dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber.
It is the second time taxpayers will be picking up the cost for Mr. Mulroney's legal battles. The former prime minister won a $2.1-million settlement in 1996 after he sued Ottawa for defamation for "falsely" accusing him of taking kickbacks in the Airbus affair. Mr. Mulroney had sued for $50-million, but settled for $2.1-million that he said would cover his legal costs.
