BRAMPTON, Ont. - An Islamic extremist who masterminded a plot to bomb downtown Toronto in an effort to terrorize Canadians and cripple the economy became the fifth member of the "Toronto 18" to be convicted Thursday when he entered a surprise guilty plea.

Zakaria Amara, 24, his head bowed, quietly agreed to be tried by a judge alone before admitting his role in the plan aimed in part at forcing Canadian soldiers to leave Afghanistan.

Police thwarted the diabolical plot when they arrested Amara and 17 other people in the summer of 2006.

In an agreed statement of facts, Crown lawyer Ione Jaffe told court that Amara planned to rent U-Haul trucks, pack them with explosives and detonate them via remote control in the Toronto area.

"It's gonna start kicking ass," Amara said of the planned bombings during one police-intercepted conversation. "It's going to be kicking ass like never before."

Amara said the attack, which he planned over three consecutive days to maximize the panic, would be bigger than that in London in 2005.

One date chosen for the strike was Sept. 11 - the same date as the al-Qaida attacks on the United States in 2001 - "to teach the world to be aware of this date forever," Amara was heard saying during one intercept played for the court.

The plot also involved bombing RCMP headquarters, nuclear-power plants and attacking Parliament.

"Who is the leader? I guess I am," Amara told an undercover agent.

A co-conspirator talked with relish about the carnage and horrendous damage that would be caused to several downtown blocks, comparing it to a bombing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and calling it "the perfect crime."

The attack would "screw" Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Canadian government, and the military, the conspirator said in another intercepted conversation.

Canada might even withdraw its troops from Afghanistan as a result, he said.

Amara, of Mississauga, Ont., wearing a white dress shirt, black vest and dress pants, green skull cap and sporting a full, trimmed beard, showed little emotion as details of the horrific plot were read out.

Several female relatives, some wearing a hijab, sat behind the accused in the witness box also showing little outward emotion.

Another man that prosecutors allege was a co-leader of the group remains in custody awaiting trial.

One target of the plot was the Toronto Stock Exchange. The aim, according to the co-conspirator, was to "affect the economy, make it lose half a trillion dollars and close the exchange for days."

The other targets were the headquarters of Canada's spy agency on Toronto's busy Front Street and an unidentified military base.

In one conversation, the co-conspirator objected to Amara's plan to put metal chips in the bombs because that would intentionally hurt innocent people.

At the same time, the man said, casualties "would be good because it would show that we are not afraid (to hurt or kill people)."

The group also considered attacking the Sears Tower in Chicago or UN headquarters in New York three months after the proposed "Battle of Toronto," court heard.

Amara, who was married with one child at the time, planned to flee to Pakistan around the time of the blast and then move onto Afghanistan.

He also admitted to a leadership role in organizing a winter camp north of Toronto in December 2005 in which "recruits" were given basic combat training along with indoctrination in the extremist jihadi cause.

On several calls with his confidantes, Amara acknowledges that he risked a lengthy jail term but said he "wont feel sorry" if arrested as long as he had "tried his best."

Through an undercover police agent, Amara attempted to buy large quantities of ammonium nitrate - commonly used in fertilizer - and other chemicals to build the bombs, court heard.

Police pounced on June 2, 2006, when an undercover agent delivered 120, 25-kilogram bags labelled ammonium nitrate but containing a harmless substance to a warehouse in Newmarket, Ont., rented by the plotters.

RCMP explosives experts determined a one-tonne truck bomb would have caused "catastrophic" damage to a high-rise building 30 metres away and death and injury to anyone nearby.

Amara pleaded guilty to two counts - knowingly participating in a terrorist group, and intending to cause an explosion that could kill people or damage property for the benefit of a terrorist group.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Bruce Durno entered convictions against Amara and set a sentence-hearing date for Oct. 20.

Four of the group members have now pleaded guilty and one was convicted after a trial.

Charges were stayed or dropped against seven people and six men still face trial.

Last Friday, Ali Dirie was sentenced to seven years after pleading guilty to taking part in the homegrown terrorist group. The 26-year-old's sentence amounts to two years after time served is factored.

In September, Saad Gaya, 21, pleaded guilty to intending to cause an explosion for the benefit of a terrorist group and is to be sentenced next month.

Gaya and Saad Khalid were arrested while unloading bags labelled "ammonium nitrate" from a truck driven by an undercover police officer.

Khalid, 23, pleaded guilty in May and was handed a 14-year prison sentence. He was given seven years credit for pre-trial custody and can apply for parole after less than 2 1/2 years.

Last year, a judge found Nishanthan Yogakrishnan, 21, guilty of participating in, and contributing to, a terrorist group and was sentenced in May to 2 1/2 years before being released because of time served.

Просто интересно стало, что двигало этими парнями?
Я еще могу "сугубо материалистично" объяснить такие действия со стороны афганцев и палестинцев.
Но у нас, в Канаде... может они, на самом деле сформировались как "духовно развитые гармоничные личности"?
Со своим пониманием веры, долга, ответсвенности перед будущим цивилзации, etc...

Отслеживаются, причем не только спецслужбами страны. Когда некого отслеживать, то все равно группы отслеживаются. Чтобы всегда можно было отрапортовать об этом. Если не о чем рапортовать, то объект рапорта создается.
Я не про конкретный случай. Я про теракты в целом. То, что авторство многих из них сомнительно -- достаточно широко распространенное мнение.
