Vancouver's first fully legal backyard-chicken eggs could be in frying pans as early as June.

City staff are preparing to take registrations from would-be egg farmers as soon as council approves enabling bylaw changes expected June 1.

"After that, people will be able to register their hens," said Tom Hammel, the city's deputy chief licence inspector. "We are working on a website to give people instruction on how to build their enclosures."

"We won't specify all the construction methods or materials; that will be up to the individual homeowners to decide. But we will give guidelines such as minimum size and maximum height," he said.

A public hearing Tuesday will allow public input on the required zoning changes and introduce size and location standards for residential hen houses.

Under the guidelines proposed, bird enclosures must be one metre from the property line and three metres from the nearest door or window. No more than four hens are allowed per lot and all birds must be at least four months old, to discourage impulse buying of baby chicks.

All other poultry - ducks, geese, turkeys and pheasants - remain prohibited.

Council has earmarked $20,000 for a facility to house abandoned chickens, but that project is not yet underway.

"We will probably wait a bit on that to see whether we get a lot of chickens coming in," said Hammel. The city is able to house chickens in existing dog kennels.

"We do handle a small number [of abandoned chickens] now, but it is not ideal, as they may be near dogs," he said.

What you need to know if you are building a chicken coop and run:

The entire enclosure - coop and run - must be roofed

The coop and run may not be placed in a front yard

Minimum area per bird must be four square feet inside the coop and ten square feet of run

Total size of the enclosure may be no more than 100 square feet in area and no more than two metres high

А не разрешили, сказали бы: "бедные ванкуверские хомячки не могут держать курочек и есть свежие яйца" и добавили бы: "Завтра еще кошек, собак и хомячков запретят".... Так что во всем есть свои плюсы и минусы. НО по мне - уж лучше был бы запрет, воняют они... мне не понравится - если у соседей курицы появятся.

Так о том и речь, что вся хомячковая жизнь это сплошные запреты и разрешения, т.е. ПМГ.
Нет свободы выбора, что бы было так: хочешь - завел кур или даже корову на балконе, а не хочешь - мягко объяснил соседу почему его корова тебе мешает, по понятиям...

.... НО по мне - уж лучше был бы запрет, воняют они... мне не понравится - если у соседей курицы появятся.

Так в ж вроде не в Ванквере живете... вам пока ничего не угрожает...

The 25- page booklet allegedly lists people, services, and streets that are exempt from paying parking tickets. The secret protocol apparently applies to a wide range of motorists including delivery vans, out-of-town visitors and even taxis and limousines.

B.C.'s marijuana growing operations are getting bigger and their producers more creative.

RCMP teams in Chase and Quesnel have busted grow-ops this week with almost 15,000 plants in them.

And Mission RCMP uncovered their first ever houseboat grow-op on the Fraser River Wednesday.

The 10,000 plants seized during a search warrant execution north of Quesnel Tuesday was the largest-ever indoor grow-op in the region, Const. Krista Vrolyk said.

The pot plants were on a remote rural property located in the 15000-block of Batnuni Road located accessible only by logging roads.

She said 20 officers flooded the property shortly after 5 a.m. "where they discovered two large two storey barns dedicated to the production of marijuana and a third building used for packaging and distribution."

"This operation was highly sophisticated and aimed at production of marijuana for distribution throughout Western Canada," she said.

This seizure came after an 18-month investigation. Police also seized $175,000 worth of equipment, including a commercial generator valued at approximately $100,000.

"Investigators believe the operation utilized 700 litres of diesel fuel daily in order to conduct operations," Vrolyk said.

Four men were arrested, including one Eastern European who is being held by Canadian immigration officials.

Vrolyk said the investigation into this commercial-style operation continues and more arrests and charges are anticipated.

Meanwhile Chase RCMP executed a search warrant in the 7000-block of the Squilax-Anglemont Highway in Anglemont on Tuesday and found more than 4,300 marijuana plants and over 60 pounds of dried product ready to be packaged for distribution.

"Police recovered commercial grade growing equipment including two stolen BC Hydro power transformers that were in use in the grow operation. Also discovered was a hydro electric bypass indicating a theft of the power that was running to this operation," Sgt. Troy Beauregard said in a release.

Five adults and a youth were arrested and are expected to face numerous charges.

Mission police have not yet found who was behind a marijuana grow-op located on a houseboat.

Police executed a search warrant about 4 p.m. Wednesday on the rustic vessel moored on the Fraser River in rural Mission.

They found 300 mature pot plants and evidence that an expansion of the operation was underway.

"RCMP members noted that it appears as though all of the pollution from the grow operation was being dumped into the Fraser River," Cpl. Raina Siou .

"BC Hydro has service to the area of the moored house boat."

She said it was the first houseboat grow-op that Mission RCMP has encountered.

"There was no one found on the house boat. This investigation is still on going," she said.

Но некоторое время назад выяснилось, что вдобавок к этому автомобили собирают базу данных SSID и MAC-адресов всех WiFi-сетей, которые попадают в зону доступа. Поскольку автомобили тщательно объезжают все дороги, то Google получает практически 100%-ную карту приватных WiFi-точек. Этот факт вызвал подозрение у немецких властей, и Агентство по защите информации (DPA) в Гамбурге провело аудит одного автомобиля Street View. И тут выяснилось страшное.

Оказалось, что автомобиль не только регистрирует SSID и MAC-адреса, но также полностью перехватывает весь трафик, который передаётся в открытых WiFi-сетях. В субботу 15 мая представители компании Google официально признали этот факт и объяснили, что это программистская ошибка, датированная 2006 годом.

По словам представителей Google, перехват трафика с WiFi-сетей был частью одного из экспериментальных проектов, и этот код совершенно случайно попал на машины Street View.

Компания пообещала удалить собранные за три года данные «настолько быстро, насколько возможно», а также немедленно прекратить сбор информации в WiFi-сетях с помощью машин Street View.

«Команда программистов Google много работает, чтобы завоевать ваше доверие — и мы остро сознаём, что здесь мы очень сильно провалились». "

Canada Spending $1B on Security for G8/G20 Summit in June

The Canadian government disclosed ... that the total price tag to police the elite Group of Eight meeting in Muskoka, as well as the bigger-tent Group of 20 summit starting a day later in downtown Toronto, has already climbed to more than $833-million. It said it?s preparing to spend up to $930-million for the three days of meetings that start June 25.

That price tag is more than 20 times the total reported cost for the April, 2009, G20 summit in Britain, with the government estimating a cost of $30-million, and seems much higher than security costs at previous summits ­ the Gleneagles G8 summit in Scotland, 2005, was reported to have spent $110-million on security, while the estimate for the 2008 G8 gathering in Japan was $381-million.

By comparison, the estimated total cost of security for the 17-day 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver was just over $898-million.
