NDP push for bill to allow extended family reunification

"Federal New Democrats hope they’ll be fourth-time lucky with a private member’s bill aimed at allowing immigrants to be reunited with relatives in Canada. For the past 10 years or so, the party has been trying to change immigration laws to allow immigrants to bring over relatives who don’t fit under the government’s definition of “family class”–essentially, immediate family and grandparents.

Burnaby-Douglas MP Bill Siksay said it was first introduced by fellow NDP MP Libby Davies, before he attempted to get it passed during his own tenure as the party’s immigration critic. Former Ontario MP Peggy Nash took it on and now it’s Olivia Chow, MP for Trinity-Spadina and the NDP’s current citizenship and immigration critic, who is taking a stab at it. She was in Burnaby on Wednesday to announce the introduction of her “Once in a Lifetime” bill. “Family reunification is the most solid part of the Canadian immigration system,” said Siksay in an interview. It’s why many immigrants choose Canada, because they can sponsor other family members later. “We need to build on that strength.”

If passed by Parliament, the bill would allow each Canadian citizen or permanent resident, once in their lifetime, to sponsor a relative who does not qualify under the government’s family class. Siksay said the bill would assist immigrants who perhaps don’t have parents to sponsor, or whose extended family members, such as aunts, uncles or cousins, were part of a close family support network back in their home countries.

The bill comes at a time when the Conservative government is changing immigration rules to favour economic immigrants, like investors and those with employment already arranged in Canada, Siksay said. There’s now also a focus on bringing in temporary workers, mainly in low-paying jobs such as agricultural workers and live-in caregivers, who are often exploited, he said. The changes are making Canada’s immigration system more like that of Europe where it’s very difficult for migrant workers to become citizens and as a result, governments face challenges successfully integrating immigrant groups, Siksay said. “We’re emulating the least successful part [of European immigration systems] at the expense of the most successful part [of the Canadian system]. The Conservatives seem to have it absolutely backwards.”"

Лучше б сроки по родителям уменьшили, прежде чем дальним родственникам дорогу открывать.

Я так думаю что брат с сестрой обычно по возрасту проходят, и сами могут подсуетиться и по профиммиграции приехать, или манитобской, или caregiver, если желание есть заканадиться. А родители - нет.

бла, бла, бла... они так каждое своё желание пытаюццо через парламент пропихнуть. кроме популизма и квази-патриотизма у демократов ничего больше в арсенале и нету. лично надеюсь, что и в этот раз им рога обломают.
