VANCOUVER — Health Canada monitoring stations have detected a "minuscule" increase in radiation levels along the B.C. coast in the wake of the nuclear crisis in Japan but some residents weren't taking their chances.

Health spokesman Gary Holub said increased radiation levels were expected, and less than the increase in radiation levels Canadians would see naturally when it rains.

He stressed the increase posed no health risk to Canadians.

The agency installed nine additional monitoring stations along the West Coast late last week, as public concerns persisted about possible radioactive drift from Japan making it thousands of kilometres across the Pacific Ocean to North America.

Canadian health officials are reassuring the public there's no need to fear fallout from the Japan, but some residents of B.C. remain nervous.

A number of military surplus stores around Vancouver said they fielded an average of 30 to 40 calls a day from alarmed citizens asking for geiger counters to measure radioactivity, "baby gas masks," potassium iodide supplements and suits to protect them from hazardous materials.

A tiny amount of radiation from Japan’s leaking nuclear reactors has been detected in B.C., but health officials insist it’s too small to worry about.

In its Monday update on the radiation coming out of Japan, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control said Health Canada has detected 0.0000005 millisieverts of radiation “over the past few days.”

“These amounts are negligible and do not pose a health risk to British Columbians,” said the update.

The amount of radiation from the crippled reactors is “significantly less” than radiation coming from natural sources, such as our soil, the sun and outer space.

For example, the average British Columbian is exposed to two to three millisieverts of radiation per year.

The dose of radiation a person receives on a non-stop flight from Vancouver to Toronto is 0.01 millisieverts.

One CT scan exposes a person to between five and 30 millisieverts of radiation.

The BCCDC said it is closely monitoring the situation and advises no one to take potassium iodide, unless instructed by a doctor. The drug is used to prevent cancer of the thyroid caused by radiation.

As long as the reactors in Japan are spewing radiation, some of it will arrive in B.C.

“BCCDC will continue to work closely with Health Canada to interpret these results,” said the update.

“We are expecting very slight increases in radiation until a week after the reactors are stabilized.”

Все измерения сделаны на балконе, там же где и в предыдущие дни. Район южный Бёрнаби.

эти большие, ярко-жёлтые железные, с ручкой и стрелочной шкалой - не покупайте. Они предназначены для армии и гражданской обороны, поэтому очень грубые и показывают только реально большие уровни радиации, раз этак в 1000 раз превышающие естественный фон.

имхо, именно такие уровни и интересно мерять, а не фон...

Ok спасибо за совет. У нас в Латвии был такой же как у. Joy-Joy Чего-то не взяли с собой в Канаду . где-то он так и валяется там. Попробую на е-вау найти такой же

имхо, именно такие уровни и интересно мерять, а не фон...

Я думаю что от Фукусимы таких уровней не дождаться в принципе (в наших краях).

А по большому счёту ты прав конечно, но люди же хотят купить прибор чтоб мерить прямо сейчас, а не когда протрубит пушной зверёк.
