King of strings

If you haven’t heard violinist M axim Vengerov wring rich emotion and passion out of his strings, you’re in for a surprising treat: he’s playing at the Orpheum Theatre this Tuesday (October 10) as part of a Vancouver Recital Society presentation. The 33-year-old Russian star has been wowing concertgoers since he was in his early teens and playing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. But this is a chance to see the dark and handsome artist show his stuff with just pianist Lilya Zilberstein backing him up. The program includes 10 of the Dmitri Shostakovich preludes he’s made a name for himself performing, plus a rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Sonata in C Minor that just might rip your heart out.

This Saturday (October 7), the Vancouver Art Gallery marks its 75th anniversary with Founder’s Day, a major public celebration on its downtown grounds. Live performances, art projects, and a free hot-dog barbecue are just some of the attractions. The special 10-cent admission fee (the price it was in 1931 when the VAG opened [see picture above]) also gets you into the opening day of the major new exhibit, Emily Carr: New Perspectives on a Canadian Icon. Just when we thought we had a handle on Carr—who she was, what she did—the VAG tells us otherwise. As the first nationally touring show of her work since 1971, this promises fresh ways of seeing. In addition to her significant paintings, drawings, and watercolours, we get glimpses into Carr’s lesser works, including ceramic pots, hooked rugs, and self-mocking cartoons. Look, too, for historic First Nations art and paintings of First Nations subjects by some of Carr’s white contemporaries.

я подумаю... а вообще-то прочтения венеры в мехах вполне достаточно....
