Established in 1972, the Pražák Quartet is one of the leading string quartets from the former Czechoslovakia, and among the longest-lived from any country. Not surprisingly, the ensemble has shown a preference for Czech repertory, gaining attention for its place in the unique Czech quartet tradition, and for its musical virtuosity. Their warm, burnished, mellow Bohemian sound is definitive, and makes for incomparable playing of music of their birthplace. Since they first played for us, their superb musicianship and fascinating chamber arrangements are a highlight every season they return.

Septet for winds and strings in E flat major, Opus 20

Franz Schubert
Octet for winds and strings in F major, D803

Led by Martin Beaver on violin, this Octet includes eminent Canadian musicians Rivka Golani on viola, James Campbell on clarinet, and Joel Quarrington on bass. Beaver led the Tokyo String Quartet until their retirement, and is also a soloist with notable symphonies worldwide. Golani, a virtuosic soloist, is an obvious inspiration to composers, with more than 250 pieces having been written for her. Campbell has performed with Glenn Gould, appeared as soloist with over 50 orchestras, performed in 25 countries, and taught on 5 continents.

A truly unique ensemble performance highlighting Schubert’s great masterpiece —you must not miss.
