US Nuclear Sub Sinks Japanese Fishing Training Ship off of Diamond Head, O'ahu, Hawaii
It's the lead story on news reports around the world. The nuclear submarine USS Greenville struck and sunk the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishing vessel about ten miles off of Diamond Head, O'ahu on Friday, February 9, 2001.
The Ehime Maru was operated by the Uwajima Fisheries High School and used for training of students. The school is located in Uwajima, on the west coast of Japan’s southern island of Shikoku, about 420 miles from Tokyo.
There are currently 47 maritime schools in Japan, of which 33 offer long-distance maritime excursions as part of their core curriculum. The Uwajima Fisheries High School runs three trips a year to Hawaii, each lasting about two months. There are currently about twenty such ships in the waters of Hawaii.
While the ship refuels, the students get to sightsee and shop in Hawaii.
Nine members of the 35 member crew of the Japanese training vessel remain listed as missing and presumed dead. These include four teenagers, two instructors and three crewmen.
In addition 12 students and crew of the Japanese ship were hospitalized as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
The USS Greenville was practicing an emergency surfacing procedure known as "emergency main ballast blow" at the time of the incident.
Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Thomas Fargo related that, under normal submarine operations, a submarine will surface 9 to 12 miles off the coast before returning to base. He said the submarine commander normally does an acoustical and visual search to see if there are any ships in the area.
Clearly something went wrong on Friday and the repercussions have already begun. On Saturday, February 10, Commander Scott Waddle, who was in charge of the submarine's operations when it surfaced, has been transferred to a position on the staff of the Commander Submarine Forces Pacific pending an investigation of the collision. Capt. Tony Cortese will serve as the Greeneville's commanding officer.
In Japan, Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori is being criticized for continuing to play golf after receiving the news of the collision, rather than proceed directly to the crisis management center.
Formal apologies have already been made to the Japanese government as well as to the families of the deceased and injured.
The Japan-America Society of Hawaii is the coordinating agency for local residents who want to contribute to the families of victims of the Ehime Maru, destroyed Friday when it collided with the nuclear-powered submarine USS Greeneville.
