You'd need a spark plug socket, ratchet and extension. And a new set of spark plugs, of cause.

Yes, you are right, but I don't know how to take coils off the spark plugs. I want to do it myself because this type of activity gives me some pleasure: you know it.

Thanks.

First you take off the black plastic cover on top the engine. You'll need a 10mm socket wrench. The plugs are buried deep in the engine. You'll need a special 5/8 inch plug wrench. It has to go 6 inches into the engine as well as the rubber boot inside the plug wrench will grab the loose plug and pull it out. You'll see 4 electrical connections on top of the engine. You'll need to remove the 10mm bolt securing the plastic piece that covers the plugs. Remove the bolt and the electrical connection. You'll need a screwdriver to slightly lift the clip on top of the electrical connection when sliding off the wires. Pull the big plastic piece out of the engine. At this point, use your 5/8 spark plug tool to remove the plug. Please do yourself a favor and do this one plug at a time. When the new plug is in, replace the plastic boot, electrical connection and put the bolt back in then go to the next plug.

In this case, I strongly suggest you buy yourself a repair manual as a birthday present. Haynes' ones sold in Canadian Tire stores (sometimes referred to as "Crappy Tire" by locals) are, in my opinion, quite good. Not very advanced while still being useful - just exactly what a home mechanic needs. Alternatively, you could borrow a copy in a public library; they often carry a few ones, especially for popular models like yours. However, if you plan on performing the maintenance often, investing in a manual may be a good idea as they pay themselves over twice the first time you use it instead of going to a mechanic for repairs. Just take your time to read stuff a few times over before proceeding with repair, proceed with caution and remember check on things from time to time and you'll be fine. Regarding tools: perhaps in 90 percent of all cases you will get away with a basic $30 toolbox - just look for one that comes with screwdriver bits, sockets (both metric and SAE, if possible), a spark plug adapter and a ratchet. Most of them do, anyway. Certainly, sometimes you will find yourself in a situation that requires a special tool (e.g. a hex bolt) and you have to buy tools by piece - that's where it quickly becomes expensive. However, such occasions are relatively infrequent. It also helps to have a garage, especially in Vancouver, where it rains too bloody much (for my taste). Other than that, it's a very nice hobby and great way to stay in shape (that is, if you rotate tires often). Good luck!

P.S. WAL-MART sells nice set of 2 tonn jack stands for less than $20 and a 2-tonn trolley jack for about $25. Comes handy when checking/replacing brake pads or shoes, rotating tires etc.

Oh... and, perhaps, a single important note regarding the change of spark plugs: do not overtighten! You do NOT want to strip threads on either plug or (much worse) the cylinder. If in doubt, use a torque wrench ;) Oh, and I usually apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the plug threads just in case :)

Ranger, how is the anti-seize compound called and is it sold in the same "crappy store" ?

Thanks.

Of course, it is! Just look for something called "anti-seize compound", usually in the same section. Or ask somebody from Parts department for directions :)

Alternatively, I can lend it to you. The same goes for socket and ratchet wrench. I have to check if I have an extender, though. Most probably, I do.

I live at Joyce SkyTrain in East Vancouver. Let me know if you're interested

Thanks a lot, Ranger, for your attitude but I think I'd better off investing in tools because maintenance should be performed on a regular basis. So I am on my way to the "crappy store" where I guess I won't miss on some fun.
Thanks a lot to the rest of you who stepped forward with the intention to help me.

See you, guys.
