Casper Boxer, a white boxer dog living on a Quebec farm near Ottawa, received an RBC Visa card this week with a $1,000 credit limit.
However, Casper won't be maxing it out anytime soon, since he can't sign his name.
Casper's owner, Bob Moscatelly, says he receives so many credit card applications at his sheep and cattle farm that he decided to see how closely the Royal Bank of Canada was checking them.
Moscatelly, 45, says he correctly filled in Casper's birth date as May 12, 2005. Then he listed the boxer's occupation as security guard and his salary as $35,000 a year. He left the social insurance number section blank.
"The nice lady from RBC called me Mr. Boxer when I called to activate the card and I had to stop myself from laughing. When she asked me for my birth date, I tried to remember whether I had used his birthday or mine so the application would seem like it had come from an adult."
Moscatelly said he told the woman his birth date should be 1965, not 2005. Then the line went dead because of a lightning storm. He decided to end the ruse during a second call because activating the card would be fraudulent.
RBC spokeswoman Kathy Bevan said Thursday there is little that banks can do to prevent people who provide false information from getting credit cards.
"There wasn't any red flag in the application," Bevan said.
