Good !
A credible statesman from Canada.
Obama probably asked him to go.
The Harper Government™ was bypassed and look like idiots ... once again.

It is a really sad state of affairs when Canadians have to depend on a former Prime Minister to conduct foreign affairs diplomacy to deal with an tense international issue. How does Harper explain that to Canadians? Does not bode well for Harper and his Reform government especially heading into an election. Is that Harper's take on what leadership is about?

Gee ... that kinda makes Harper look like a bonehead, doesn't it ?
Especially as Barack Obama probably asked Chrétien to go.

Chrétien will tell Putin to bide his time until the Harper Government™ pinheads are thrown out of office.
Canada can then come at the issue pragmatically instead of ideologically.

It's telling that the Globe would go to U. of C. for "informed commentary".
They are about as good at diplomacy as they are at economics

One thing is certain. Unlike Harper and his constant and cowardly long distance bellicosity directed towards Russia as a means of attracting the ethnic vote, Chretien will spend actual face time with Putin and it won't be for votes. It will be for the purpose of getting something done in a way that mature adults do business. Note that long time Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov decided to boycott the Arctic Council this year because of Harper's childish rants. And then, to show the world the depth of the Harper Government's petulance and immaturity, Harper had his Inuk poodle Leona curtly introduce the Russian guy who did show up.
Canada: Haven't you seen enough of this dog and pony kid's show yet?

I have to laugh. Clearly the Reformacon commenters are deeply troubled by Chretien even after he has been out of power for more then a decade. And they should be. After the foolish baiting of the last year Putin will never be seen to engage with Harper.

What is seldom reported in the west is that Putin has always supported a similar "federal" status for eastern Ukraine that Quebec enjoys inside Canada.
That was also a cornerstone of the Minsk II Agreement, something Kiev has yet to take any action on. They have been too busy rewriting world history in their school textbooks.

Chretien understands what diplomacy means unlike the reactionary we have as PM today. Chretien also understands that it is beyond amateurish to treat foreign policy as a domestic vote-buying strategy at all times.

Mr. Harper has no time to meet with anyone with whom he disagrees. Moreover, he has a hockey game he does not want to miss.
Thank goodness someone will talk to the Russians. Perhaps some one will talk to the Iranians.
Our leader has time only for Netanyahu.

The new Cold War will not last. Our government's posture is miss construed idealism.
It is time we get a leadership which deals is real politics. We look quite childish on the global scene. It is a mistake to think that the current Ukrainian government represents all of Ukraine - it will not last.

Real Politick?
Harper thinks that means In and Out schemes to fleece taxpayers for the benefit of Harper and the CPC;
and praising the Old Duff for being his 'hardest working appointee'. Can't wait for Princess Pam's lawyer to defend on the basis of no one told her she couldn't follow the Harper approved Duffster model.
My word, that Harper guy surely is living up to his promises on reforming the Senate and all that. Reforming who sups from the trough, is job one for Mr. Open and Accountable.

Chretien actually talking to Putin may just accomplish more for Ukrainians and Canadians than any of Harper's frothing at the mouth and brandishing his little stick (from the safety of his closet) ever will.
He certainly won't be doing the damage Harper has done -
